Meridor says Winter opposed Gaza operation — Jerusalem Post

In Israel, Yashar party member Shaul Meridor said that Israel Defense Forces reserve brigadier general Ofer Winter, after October 7, tried to persuade cabinet members not to launch a ground campaign in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

Meridor’s statement

According to Meridor, Winter opposed a ground maneuver in Gaza and approached cabinet representatives to persuade them not to begin the operation. Meridor also claimed that Winter tried to convince Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to carry out the operation.

“Sometimes I am struck by the gap between image and reality,” Meridor said. He also stated that Winter now calls himself a person with the most offensive views.

Political context

At the beginning of the war with Hamas, Winter served as a reserve brigadier general in the Israel Defense Forces. In August, he launched a new right-wing party, People of Israel.

Meridor also said that Winter’s party would not be able to influence the formation of the next government. According to him, this political force does not have 61 mandates and is not close to Netanyahu.

The publication also cites Maariv senior political commentator Mati Tuchfeld. According to his information, after the closure of electoral lists, several consultations on Winter and the possible accession of the new right-wing party took place over the course of a week at Likud headquarters with Netanyahu’s participation.
