In Ghana, YMCA gave schoolchildren backpacks made from recycled plastic — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana’s Western Region, the YMCA gave 50 pupils at Funko M/A School backpacks made from recycled plastic waste. This is the first distribution under the Green Bags Outreach initiative, MyJoyOnline reports.
Backpacks with school supplies
The distribution began on September 15, 2026, when 50 Green Bags backpacks were handed over to pupils. Each contained notebooks, a mathematics set, a drawing pad, pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners.
Dear Future Star cards with personalized messages from sponsors for the children were also added to the sets. The first backpack distribution was supported by 20 individual sponsors.

Plan for 12 months
The Green Bags Outreach initiative is part of the Green Futures Project, which combines environmental activities, local production and support for education. According to project manager Goddy Nana Mensa, the program has environmental, economic and educational goals.
Western Region YMCA Director Nana Pepera Antwi said the organization plans to reach 10 schools over the next 12 months and give children 2,000 backpacks made from recycled plastic. Under the Green Futures Project, more than 50,000 pieces of plastic waste have already been collected, over 150 recycled products have been made, six coastal clean-ups have been held and 18 educational sessions have taken place in schools.
