Merz sharply rebuked far-right lawmakers in the Bundestag over Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reacted sharply to the behavior of lawmakers from the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” during a Bundestag session.

During his speech on Russia’s war against Ukraine, some lawmakers laughed and shouted heckles. In response, Merz criticized their behavior and said, “Have a nice trip to Moscow.”

The incident occurred during the chancellor’s speech, when he was speaking about the need to support Ukraine and the prospects for achieving a just peace.

Merz stated that lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, the U.S., and Europe, and that Ukraine is currently defending more than just its freedom. At that moment, heckling and laughter erupted from the AfD benches.

In response, the chancellor addressed the members of the right-wing populist faction directly.

“The fact that you are laughing at this is a telling sign, ladies and gentlemen. You are laughing at the fate of millions of people in this country and traveling to Moscow for your champagne receptions. Have a nice trip there! Have a nice trip there!” said the head of government.

After that, Merz emphasized that “Ukraine is defending not only its own citizens, not only its own freedom, but it is also defending our freedom.” “It is defending the freedom and security of all of Europe,” said the chancellor to the applause of most members of the Bundestag.

This was reported by Ukrinform’s correspondent in Berlin.
