Italy's tourism minister resigned following Meloni's demand

In Italy, Tourism Minister Daniela Santanque resigned nearly 24 hours after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on her to step down in order to stabilize the political situation following the defeat in the referendum.

Bloomberg reports this.

As noted, on the evening of March 24, Meloni publicly demanded Santanque’s resignation, as she is under investigation on fraud charges. She denies any wrongdoing.

Two officials from the Ministry of Justice also resigned that same day, and Meloni welcomed this decision, calling on the Minister of Tourism to act “in the same spirit of institutional sensitivity.”

Santanke resisted these calls for nearly an entire day.

"I don’t want to be a scapegoat for a defeat that I certainly did not cause. However, I will say ‘I comply’ without hesitation and do what you ask," she said.

Melonihas begun a purge of personnel in the Italian government — Politico.

As a reminder, Meloni lost the referendum on judicial reform.

Meloni also expressed understanding for Orbán’s decision to block aid to Ukraine.
