South Korean Education Ministry to correct flag image error in textbook
South Korea’s Ministry of Education has ordered a correction to the image of the national flag in a middle school textbook, where the central taegeuk symbol was reproduced incorrectly. The Korea Herald reports.
Incorrect direction of the symbol
In a government-approved Korean language textbook, the red part of the central taegeuk symbol curved downward to the right. On the official flag of the Republic of Korea, it curves downward to the left.
The error became known after Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, posted a photograph of the textbook on Facebook. He said that not only the publisher but also the Ministry of Education bears responsibility, as the ministry approved the textbook.

Correction to be sent to schools
The ministry said that the publisher had already prepared a correction with the correct image and is to publish it on its website. Notices about the correction are planned to be sent to schools within a week.
The agency expressed regret over the incorrect image of the national flag. The ministry also said it would check images of state symbols in all government-approved textbooks to prevent similar errors.
