Hoseo University in South Korea raises funds for flood victims in Nepal — Korea Herald

Hoseo University in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, has launched a fundraising campaign to support people affected by severe flash flooding in Nepal. More than 100 Nepalese students at the university and faculty members have joined the initiative.

The campaign is being held under the slogan “Save Nepal, Save Us, Save Earth” and will continue until early October. Its aim is to draw attention to the consequences of the natural disaster, raise donations for affected communities, and promote carbon neutrality, Korea Herald reports.

Call for international support

The president of the university’s Nepalese Student Association, 24-year-old Ajit Yadav, said Nepal had suffered severe destruction due to flash floods and needs greater attention and support from the international community. He linked the tragedy to glacier melting caused by climate change and said people had died as a result of the disaster.

“We are far from our country, but we are still Nepalese,” Yadav said. According to him, people can join the fundraiser regardless of their citizenship, as the natural disaster should not be viewed solely as Nepal’s problem.

Support for students

The university is also determining whether any of its Nepalese students or their family members were affected by the floods. The institution plans to provide special scholarships to students whose families or hometowns suffered damage so that they can continue their studies.

As of Wednesday, the university had not confirmed any cases in which its students were directly affected by the disaster. At the same time, communications remained disrupted in some areas of Nepal, so some students may not yet have known the full extent of the damage to their families or communities. The amount of the scholarships will be determined after the situation is assessed within the framework of an additional budget.
