An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 was felt in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, on the evening of September 8. The tremors were recorded at a considerable depth—about 143 kilometers. There were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or damage following the earthquake.
According to the National Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at 9:38 p.m. local time. Its epicenter was located at a depth of about 143 kilometers. The tremors were felt in the capital, Kathmandu, and other areas. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0.
As of the time the first reports emerged, there were no reports of fatalities or injuries. Nor were there any reports of serious damage to buildings or infrastructure. Following the earthquake, local authorities monitored the situation and checked whether it had caused damage to populated areas.
Earthquakes have already been recorded in Nepal
This is not the first seismic event in the region in recent days. On September 6, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 was recorded in Nepal. Its epicenter was significantly closer to the surface—at a depth of about 20 kilometers.
Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.0, occurred on September 3 in Tibet. Thus, seismic activity in this region has been ongoing for several days. However, the September 8 earthquake itself should not be confused with the catastrophic flooding that occurred in Nepal in late August. According to available data, these events were not directly related.
Nepal is still recovering from massive flooding
The new earthquake occurred at a time when the country is still dealing with the aftermath of a massive natural disaster. On August 26, in the Rasuwa district, near the border with Tibet, a torrent of water and debris swept through the Bhote Koshi River valley. The flood destroyed parts of settlements, roads, and bridges. Hydropower facilities were also damaged.
Initially, it was assumed that an earthquake might have caused the disaster. However, the U.S. Geological Survey later reached a different conclusion. According to American experts, the disaster was caused by a glacier collapse. Following this, a powerful mudslide consisting of water, rocks, and debris rushed down the valley. No seismic activity was recorded at the time the disaster began.
The flood claimed thousands of lives
The consequences of the flood were devastating. According to the latest data released, at least 1,252 people died in Nepal. Another 3,916 people are still missing. Rescue workers managed to evacuate nearly 9,500 people from dangerous areas.
The disaster destroyed more than just homes. Roads and bridges were damaged, making it more difficult for rescue workers to reach the affected areas. Nepalese authorities also warned of a possible further rise in the water level of the Bhote Kosi River. Therefore, after the flood, local authorities continued to monitor the situation in the valley.
The disaster also affected Tibet
The effects of the disaster were felt across the border in Tibet as well. According to Chinese media reports, 16 people died there. Another 550 people remain missing.
Thus, the region faced both the aftermath of a massive flood and new seismic tremors simultaneously. At the same time, the earthquake that occurred on September 8, according to preliminary data, did not cause a new large-scale disaster.
