Cyprus justice minister promises stronger police presence in Limassol
Cyprus Justice Minister Kostas Fitiris promised to strengthen the police presence in Limassol. New officers are expected to join bicycle patrols and the Z rapid response police unit.
Fitiris made the statement during a meeting with Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and municipal representatives, Cyprus Mail reports. The parties discussed police work, youth delinquency, road safety and noise pollution.
Patrolling public spaces
Armeftis positively assessed the work of the bicycle police and called for it to be strengthened. The issue of police presence in the city was also raised by Disy MP Fotini Tsiridou, who chairs the parliamentary legal affairs committee.
She asked the minister about the level of patrolling in public places following a recent complaint about an indecent assault against a woman in the Dasoudi area. Tsiridou called for an increase in the number of patrols, stronger police interaction with communities and the preparation of a comprehensive crime prevention plan.

The MP also proposed ensuring a greater law enforcement presence on coastal pedestrian routes, particularly in the Dasoudi area, in the afternoon and evening. She raised the issue of assessing lighting and visibility on these routes, as well as identifying areas that may pose risks to residents and visitors.
Relocation of the police directorate
At the meeting, Fitiris and Armeftis discussed the urgent relocation of the Limassol district police directorate and the search for a suitable state-owned land plot for a new building. The mayor asked for the current premises to be transferred to the municipality after the state administration office is relocated. The minister said the request would be considered and the premises would be returned to the municipality.
Separately, the parties discussed illegal street racing. Fitiris said meetings with the relevant authorities are planned to begin in early January in order to prepare measures in advance.
