Thousands attend event at presidential residence in Troodos, Cyprus
In Troodos, Cyprus, thousands of people attended the third Let’s Go Troodos event, held at the presidential residence. For the third consecutive year, the building was opened to visitors as part of an event dedicated to local crafts, products, flavours and traditions of the island’s mountain regions, Cyprus Mail reports.
History of the residence
Visitors were able to tour the premises of the presidential residence in Troodos, which was built in 1879–1880. It was constructed under Cyprus’ first high commissioner, Sir Garnet Wolseley, as the summer headquarters of the British high commissioner.
The residence later became an administrative centre: during the summer months, almost the entire state administration moved to Troodos to avoid high temperatures.

Workshops and support for mountain communities
The programme included hands-on workshops on making palouze, weaving, traditional cuisine, silk work, mosaic and perfume making, as well as traditional music. Guests were also offered a musical programme and performances of tsiattista by folk poets.
First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides stated that the initiative is intended to open Cyprus’ landmark buildings to the public and use them for recreation, education, culture and the development of environmental awareness. According to her, the event reflects the Christodoulides government’s intention to support rural areas and increase the number of visitors to villages and festivals.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis said that the authorities seek to promote Cypriot traditional flavours among young people and give artisans an opportunity to present their products to a broad audience. Commissioner for Mountain Areas Charalambos Christofinas stressed the importance of such events in supporting producers, the primary sector and residents of mountain communities. Part of the event’s proceeds was donated to the Eleousa care home in Agros.
