Modi set a historic record for the longest tenure as Prime Minister of India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a record for the longest continuous tenure as head of government in the country’s modern history

As of June 10, Modi has been in office for 4,399 days—since he first took the oath of office on May 26, 2014

He has thus surpassed the previous record held by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, who led the government for 4,398 consecutive days — from May 13, 1952, until his death on May 27, 1964.

Nehru’s record had remained unbroken for over six decades.

Earlier, on July 25 of last year, Modi also surpassed the record of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for the longest continuous tenure in office. She led the government from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977, a total of 4,077 days.

In addition, Modi became the first prime minister since Nehru to win three consecutive parliamentary elections while in office.

The publication notes that the record was set against the backdrop of sweeping changes in the country. While India’s population was approximately 340 million during Nehru’s tenure, it had grown to over 1.31 billion by 2014 and now exceeds 1.46 billion.

The country’s political system has also expanded significantly. The number of political parties rose from 53 in the first elections of 1951–1952 to 464 in 2014 and to 744 in the 2024 elections. The number of voters during this time has increased from approximately 170 million to over 830 million people.

Regarding foreign policy, according to the Ukrainian Embassy in India, Modi has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy five times. The first talks took place in November 2021 in Glasgow. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, India has declared a policy of neutrality, and meetings between the leaders have continued on the sidelines of international summits, including the G7 and the UN General Assembly, as well as during Modi’s visit to Ukraine in 2024.

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens and businesses to reduce their use of transportation and travel. The reasons cited were rising global energy prices and the need to optimize fuel consumption.
