Monsoon rains in Pakistan’s Punjab claim 65 lives — Dawn

In Pakistan’s Punjab province, monsoon rains have killed 65 people and injured another 382. According to Dawn, a report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority also recorded damage to 224 houses and the deaths of 21 livestock animals.

Flooding in Sheikhupura district

Rawalpindi received the highest rainfall during the season, with 1,505 mm. Lahore recorded 1,316 mm of rainfall, while Sialkot received 1,256 mm. Significant rainfall was also recorded in Gujranwala, Jhelum, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Murree and other cities in the province.

In part of Sheikhupura district, a flood-like situation developed due to the overflowing of the Nulla Bhed and Nulla Dek watercourses. Water inundated 58 villages in the Ferozewala and Muridke areas, affecting 83 land parcels and 43,188 acres of land.

Compensation and water monitoring

An authority spokesperson said that the authorities are taking measures to compensate for crop and housing losses in Sheikhupura district. Families affected by deaths, injuries, property damage and livestock losses are also expected to receive compensation in accordance with the Punjab government’s policy.

The authority’s director general, Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa, said that despite record rainfall, the province ensured the timely drainage of rainwater and prepared equipment for this work in advance. According to the agency, there were no major floods on Punjab’s rivers during the monsoon season, and water levels in all rivers remained normal. The authority monitored rivers, dams and spillway structures around the clock.
