Two U.S. Navy fighter jets collided in mid-air, after which they crashed to the ground and were completely destroyed. All four crew members on board the aircraft managed to eject in time and survived.
The incident occurred approximately two miles northwest of the military base. It took place on the second day of flights, which were being watched by a large crowd of spectators.
The crash involved two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft. In videos circulating on social media, the moment of the crash is clearly visible, showing the planes colliding, losing control, and plummeting to the ground.
Huge plumes of thick black smoke immediately rose from the crash site, visible from a great distance from the epicenter of the disaster.
Eyewitnesses managed to film the moment four parachutes opened in the sky near the crash site.
Another video, posted on Instagram, shows shocked onlookers near an aircraft hangar against the backdrop of a massive fire.
Medical services and military command representatives responded promptly to the emergency and provided assistance to the injured service members.
According to U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet spokesperson Amelia Umayam, all four crew members successfully ejected from the aircraft and are currently under medical supervision. At this time, their lives are not in danger.
The military, in conjunction with emergency services, has begun investigating all the circumstances and causes of this major accident.
“Rescue workers are on the scene, the investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as soon as they become available,” airbase representatives officially stated.
