Trump's Special Envoy Visits Greenland — DR
U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry arrived in Greenland on May 18. He stated that the purpose of the trip was to establish contacts, engage with local residents, and assess the situation on the ground, denying any political motives related to potential plans for the island.
This was reported by DR.
Landry claims that he came to the country “simply to build relationships, listen, learn, and seek opportunities to develop relations between the United States, Greenland, and Denmark.”
“This is a fantastic day,” says the special envoy.
At the same time, he denies that his visit is linked to Donald Trump’s desire to make Greenland part of the U.S.
“I spoke with him late last night, and he said, ‘Go there and make as many friends as possible,’” Landry notes.
According to media reports, despite the special envoy’s visit, Trump’s main idea remains the same. He has reportedly not abandoned the idea of Greenland joining the U.S., although he previously ruled out the use of force to achieve this.
According to Ulrik Pram Gad, a researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, the problem is that “even when they say nice and kind things, it feels like pressure because Trump’s main plans haven’t been taken off the agenda.”
As a reminder, Trump announced further troop reductions in Germany.
As a reminder, the Pentagon has decided to withdraw approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. The process is planned to be carried out over the next six to twelve months. This is part of a review of U.S. troop deployments in Europe.
Berlin acknowledges that the continent will have to strengthen its own defense more quickly and more seriously to compensate for the gradual reduction of the American presence.
