At least 70 people were killed in Haiti during a gang attack, and thousands have fled their homes

In Haiti's Artibonite region, at least 70 people have been killed and dozens injured in a mass attack by armed gangs.

This was reported by DW.

According to human rights organizations, the number of victims significantly exceeds previous estimates. Initially, the police reported 16 dead and 10 injured; later, these figures were revised to 17 dead and 19 injured.

Meanwhile, the organization “Collective Defense of Human Rights” reported at least 70 deaths, calling the incident a “massacre.” According to the group, another 30 people were injured.

As a result of the attack, nearly 6,000 people were forced to flee their homes. Human rights activists criticized local authorities, highlighting the lack of an adequate response from security forces and their inability to protect the region’s population.

At a press briefing, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack and noted the varying estimates of the number of victims.

“This attack underscores the gravity of the security situation facing the people of Haiti,” he noted.

The UN also called for a full investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.

Haiti has long remained one of the most unstable countries in the region due to the activities of armed groups that control significant territories. Gang attacks, kidnappings, and mass killings are causing a deep humanitarian crisis and forcing thousands of citizens to flee their homes.

As a reminder, law enforcement previously conducted a new series of searches as part of the Matador special operation, exposing Ukrainian members of an international group that specialized in stealing luxury cars in EU countries.

Earlier in the Dnipropetrovsk region, a con artist deceived an elderly woman and stole her savings by convincing her to take them to a church for “blessing.”

Also in Kyiv, a fake mail carrier, under the pretext of exchanging money for new bills, “exchanged” a pensioner’s 260,000 hryvnias for scraps of paper.
