Two powerful earthquakes were recorded in Crete within a few hours
Two earthquakes struck off the coast of the Greek island of Crete on Friday, April 24, within a few hours of each other.
This was reported by Ekathimerini, citing the National Observatory of the Athens Institute of Geodynamics.
The first tremor, with a magnitude of 5.7, occurred approximately 23 kilometers southwest of Lasithi at a depth of 9.7 kilometers. No reports of casualties or damage were received.
A few hours later, a second earthquake was recorded 18 kilometers south of Lasithi, at a depth of 5.7 kilometers. No casualties or damage were reported.
Seismologist Akis Tselentis noted that such activity is expected following a period of minor tremors in the region. He added that the shallow depth could trigger aftershocks in the coming days, though a stronger earthquake is unlikely.
At the same time, he urged residents to follow safety precautions, check the condition of older buildings, and refrain from swimming in the sea for several days, as even small waves could pose a danger.
