A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck southeastern Türkiye — Asharq Al-Awsat

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck southeastern Türkiye on September 24. The epicenter was located slightly north of the city of Şanlıurfa, Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported.

The earthquake occurred at 10:40, or 07:40 GMT. According to Asharq Al-Awsat, AFAD said at the time of the report that it had no information about any adverse consequences of the event.

Tremors were felt intensely

Şanlıurfa Province Governor Hasan Şıldak said the earthquake was felt intensely. According to preliminary data, there were no fatalities or injuries, and no destruction was recorded.

Previous earthquakes

Türkiye is crossed by several geological fault lines that have previously caused large-scale disasters. At least 53,000 people died in a powerful earthquake in the southeast of the country in February 2023, while another approximately 7,000 died in Syria.

That earthquake also caused damage in Şanlıurfa and claimed the lives of more than 300 people there.
