The number of dangerous mosquito-borne diseases is on the rise at popular European resorts

Popular European tourist destinations are seeing a rise in the number of mosquito-borne diseases this summer. Experts attribute this to the heat and climate change, which create favorable conditions for the spread of these dangerous insects.

According to European epidemiologists, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece have already recorded about a thousand suspected cases of infection with viruses that cause dengue fever, chikungunya, and West Nile fever.

The spread of West Nile fever is causing the greatest concern. According to MailOnline, 38 people have already died from this disease in Italy. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirms that the virus is actively spreading in the country this summer, particularly in Florence and Verona. Isolated cases of infection have also been detected in Romania and North Macedonia.

In most people, West Nile fever is asymptomatic or mild. However, approximately one in 150 infected individuals may develop severe complications, such as meningitis or encephalitis.

In addition, 19 suspected cases of dengue fever have been reported in France, four in Italy, and two more in Portugal. The disease is usually accompanied by a high fever, headache, rash, and severe joint pain, and in severe cases, it can cause internal bleeding.

Experts emphasize that global warming is contributing to the expansion of the range of mosquitoes that carry dangerous infections. Due to longer periods of heat, their active season is becoming longer, which increases the risk of new disease outbreaks in regions that have not previously faced such threats.
