This week, unknown drones were spotted four times in Latvia
On the morning of May 23, another drone incursion was reported in Latvia. Earlier this week, air raid alerts due to UAVs were issued in the country almost every day.
This was reported by local Telegram channels.
- On Tuesday, May 19, the alert affected residents of Vidzeme and Latgale.
- On May 20, the Latvian National Armed Forces announced a threat in the Rezekne, Ludza, and Krāslava regions.
- An air raid alert due to UAVs in Latvia was declared on Thursday, May 21—the warning concerned the Ludza, Krāslava, and Rēzekne districts.
- On May 23, a drone crashed into Lake Dridzis in the Krāslava region in the southeastern part of the country, 20 km from the border with Belarus and 50 km from the border with Russia.
It is known that the device detonated upon contact with the water today. Police found debris. There were no casualties.
The Latvian National Armed Forces stated that sensors did not detect the drone, so no SMS alerts were sent to residents.
As a reminder, on May 23, a large-scale search was conducted in Lithuania for possible debris from a drone that may have crashed within the country. The military and other services are surveying several areas simultaneously and interviewing local residents.
In Latvia, authorities are considering the possibility that a flaw in the drones’ navigation system could have caused them to crash into empty oil tanks. This refers to a potential “AI component” in the drones’ flight path programming that could have caused them to deviate from their route; however, there is currently no official confirmation of this theory.
Earlier, Lithuania called onEurope to prepare for drone incidents.
