Pro-Russian forces may win the election in Bulgaria – Reuters
The parliamentary elections in Bulgaria on April 19 could lead to a shift in the country’s political course and weaken European unity regarding support for Ukraine. According to opinion polls, the frontrunner in the race, with about 30% support, is a political force linked to Rumen Radev, which is ahead of the pro-European GERB party.
Reuters reports this, noting that these elections will be the eighth in the last five years amid prolonged instability.
Rumen Radev advocates for the restoration of close relations with Russia, opposes security agreements with Ukraine, and is skeptical of Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone. Analysts suggest that following the weakening of Viktor Orbán’s position in the EU, the Bulgarian politician is attempting to fill the niche of a leader open to dialogue with the Kremlin. Sofia’s shift in policy jeopardizes the continued supply of weapons and military equipment that the country has provided to the Ukrainian army since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Experts warn that the election results will significantly influence the formation of a new balance of power within the European Union. Despite Bulgaria’s status as an important partner of Ukraine, the potential rise to power of pro-Russian forces could alter the country’s foreign policy priorities. Currently, the government is stepping up efforts to combat vote-buying to ensure the transparency of the electoral process.
Bulgarian police have detained 30 people as part of a large-scale operation to combat voter bribery ahead of the early parliamentary elections.
A test train service between Ukraine and Bulgaria via Romania is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2026.
