Spirit Airlines, the largest U.S. low-cost carrier, has announced its closure

UA NEWS 02 May 2026 16:10
Spirit Airlines, the largest U.S. low-cost carrier, has announced its closure

Spirit Airlines has canceled all flights and announced that it will cease operations starting on the morning of May 2.

This was reported by NBC News.

“Despite the company’s efforts, the recent significant increase in oil prices and other factors putting pressure on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook. Without additional funding, Spirit had no choice but to begin liquidation,” the company said in a statement.

Spirit has faced financial difficulties in recent years. The company filed for bankruptcy twice in 2024 and 2025. In March, the budget airline sought financial support from the U.S. administration, but negotiations between the company, bondholders, and the White House reached an impasse.

Spirit operated regular flights throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The company employed over 15,000 people.

Earlier, the U.S. warned that even if the Strait of Hormuz reopens, fuel prices will not drop immediately. Restoring supplies could take months, and uncertainty will continue to weigh on the market.
