Romania proposes the self-destruction of maritime drones near its waters
Romania has put forward a proposal regarding maritime drones that could drift in the Black Sea and approach the country’s territorial waters.
Following an explosion at a port, the Romanian minister stated that Ukrainian maritime drones could be equipped with an automatic self-destruct mechanism. According to him, such a system would activate if the drones approached Romanian territorial waters, which would help avoid potential risks to shipping and coastal security.
He noted that Ukrainian maritime drones should be programmed so that, in the event of a loss of communication or control, they cannot enter Romanian territorial waters.
The minister proposed establishing a special algorithm that would trigger the drone’s self-destruction as it approaches the border of Romanian waters.
"If you happen to lose them in the Black Sea when they approach Romanian territorial waters within 12 nautical miles, the controller operating the drone must program it to self-destruct automatically," Miruce stated.
He added that he intends to propose to the Ukrainian side that they use such a mechanism for all maritime drones launched in the Black Sea.
"Our neighbors in Ukraine, who are in such a fierce war caused by Russia, must guarantee us that all drones they launch into the Black Sea are programmed using this technical iteration," the Romanian minister said.
The idea was voiced by Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruce during a television interview, according to Defense Romania.
