At age 18, an American became the youngest professor in the world
At the age of 18 years and 364 days, American Nathan Thomas became the world’s youngest university professor. He set the record, and now, at age 21, he is continuing his studies and preparing to earn a doctorate in law. Thomas combines teaching, research, and further education, and plans to work at the intersection of law and technology in the future.
Nathan Thomas of the United States set a world record when he began teaching at a university in August 2023 at the age of 18 years and 364 days. Prior to this, Scottish mathematician Colin MacLaurin was considered the youngest man to be awarded the title of professor. He became a professor at age 19.
Nathan was born into a family of engineers and has been interested in mathematics, technology, and STEM fields since childhood. At age 10, he enrolled at Miami Dade College, and by age 14, he was continuing his studies at Florida International University.
While most of his peers were still in school, Thomas had already earned two university degrees—a bachelor’s and a master’s in electrical engineering. He received both degrees with honors. After setting the record, the American continued his studies. Now 21, Thomas is studying at the University of Miami, where he is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree.
In the future, he wants to work in the field of intellectual property law, drawing on his knowledge of engineering and technology. “Engineering taught me to break down complex problems in a structured way. I’ve applied that approach to studying law,” Thomas said.
Despite his achievements, the young professor derives the greatest satisfaction from teaching. “What I enjoy most is watching a student have that ‘aha’ moment. Teaching forces me to understand the subject on a whole new level,” he noted. Nathan Thomas continues to balance his teaching career with his studies and plans to pursue a career at the intersection of technology, law, and innovation.
