The U.S.'s largest aircraft carrier is returning home after a lengthy mission

The USS Gerald R. Ford, considered the world’s largest aircraft carrier, is returning to its home port in Virginia. This is expected to take place in mid-May. The ship has completed a deployment that lasted more than 300 days. Following the mission, it is heading back to the U.S. for refit and maintenance.

According to The Guardian, two U.S. officials reported that the aircraft carrier will leave the Middle East in the coming days and return to its home port in Virginia in mid-May.

Last week, the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush arrived in the region, bringing the total number of U.S. aircraft carriers deployed in the Middle East to three—a number not seen since 2003. The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has also been in the region since January.

This month, the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford broke the U.S. record for the longest deployment since the Vietnam War, having spent nearly 10 months at sea since departing from the Norfolk Naval Station in June.

Previously, this record was held by the USS Abraham Lincoln, which spent 294 days at sea in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this falls short of the deployment record held by the now-decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Midway. It was deployed for 332 days in 1972 and 1973.

The USS Gerald R. Ford began its deployment by heading to the Mediterranean Sea. Then, in October, it was redirected to the Caribbean as part of the largest buildup of naval forces in the region in decades.

The aircraft carrier participated in the military operation to capture Maduro. It was then sent to the Middle East as tensions with Iran escalated.

The aircraft carrier participated in the early days of the war with Iran while stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, and then, in early March, passed through the Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea. However, a fire in one of the laundry rooms forced the aircraft carrier to turn back and return to the Mediterranean Sea for repairs.
