NATO and the EU are putting pressure on Europe's defense industry

NATO and the EU are putting pressure on Europe's defense industry

In Brussels, NATO and the European Union called on European countries to drastically ramp up arms production. This involves not only increasing production volumes but also accelerating delivery times, which, according to the allies, are failing to keep pace with security needs. The importance of supporting Ukraine and protecting critical infrastructure was also emphasized. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.

In Brussels, following talks between NATO leadership and the European Commission, a clear demand was made to European countries: the defense industry must not only be expanded but also ramp up production, as current capabilities no longer match the level of modern threats.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that cooperation between the EU and the Alliance is becoming critically important against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine and general global tensions. He stated directly: “A stronger Europe means a stronger NATO,” explaining that the allies’ defense capabilities can no longer develop at a slow pace.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe must invest more and produce faster, as the issue now lies not only in the volume of weapons but also in the speed of their manufacture and delivery. According to her, the EU defense industry must shift into an accelerated development mode.

The parties paid special attention to supporting Ukraine, as well as protecting critical infrastructure in Europe, which is becoming increasingly vulnerable in the face of hybrid threats. Preparations for the upcoming NATO summit, scheduled for July, were also discussed; at this summit, the allies are expected to agree on further steps.

Against the backdrop of decisions already made to increase defense spending in Alliance countries and the launch of a large-scale EU investment program worth approximately 800 billion euros, the key issue remains not funding, but production capacity. According to European officials, Russia still produces more weapons than EU countries, which is prompting Brussels to accelerate defense production.

Additionally, the Netherlands has signed a partnership agreement with Ukraine and is investing 248 million euros in the joint production of drones.

The Dutch government is allocating an additional aid package of 248 million euros to provide the Ukrainian army with modern drones. The country’s defense minister, Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius, made the announcement at the latest “Ramstein” meeting.

Meanwhile, Germany is enhancing Ukraine’s long-range capabilities through joint drone production.
