Navrotsky criticized Germany and brought up the issue of reparations again
Polish President Karol Nawrocki criticized Germany during events in Gdańsk marking the 87th anniversary of the start of World War II. He also emphasized the need for Germany to pay reparations to Poland for the damages caused during the war.
Navrotsky asserts that the truth about this conflict “is almost never heard among our Western neighbors, among our allies in Berlin, in Germany.”
Navrotsky stressed that “it is necessary to implement the good-neighborhood treaty signed 35 years ago between Poland and Germany.”
“We need this: if Europe is to be united, if the alliance is to be real, if good neighborly relations or friendship are to be put into practice—we finally need action, not just fine and general words,” he explained.
He also pointed out that there is still no monument in Germany dedicated to the Polish victims of World War II.
“This is not a true union or true friendship if we cannot erect a monument in Berlin to the Polish victims of World War II. If the Polish minority in Germany does not have the same rights as the German minority in Poland,” he noted.
At the same time, the president once again reiterated Poland’s demand that Germany pay reparations.
“They must be paid—not only for the sake of the past and historical justice, but also for the sake of the future,” he said.
According to Navrotsky, these funds would allow us “to avoid taking out Western loans and to receive what is rightfully ours.”
Exactly one year ago, on September 1, 2025, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, during events marking the 86th anniversary of the start of World War II, stated that Warsaw would demand reparations from Germany.
At the time, Navrotsky noted that reparations would not be “an alternative to historical amnesia,” but that Poland needs “justice, truth, and clear relations with Germany.”
“I believe that the prime minister and the Polish government will support the president’s voice on the international stage, and that together with our Western neighbors, we will build a truly secure future,” the president emphasized.
In 2022, the German Foreign Ministry stated that the issue of reparations to Poland for losses during World War II had been resolved.
“The German government’s position remains unchanged; the issue of reparations has been resolved,” a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
“Poland waived its right to further reparations as early as 1953 and has repeatedly reaffirmed this waiver. This is a fundamental pillar of the modern European order. Germany bears political and moral responsibility for World War II,” the ministry spokesperson clarified.
