Netanyahu to arrive in Newark before address to UN General Assembly

In the United States, preparations for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the UN General Assembly in New York are taking place with unusual involvement from the U.S. Secret Service. The Jerusalem Post reports, citing a diplomatic source.

Arrival in Newark

According to the publication’s source, Netanyahu is expected to arrive at Newark Airport in New Jersey. This airport is located closer to Manhattan than John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, where the Israeli prime minister’s plane usually stays.

The source denied that the choice of Newark could be connected to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani or concerns over a possible provocation. According to the source, the decision resulted from discussions with the airport about where to park the plane during this visit and how to secure it.

Security measures

Netanyahu is expected to arrive in New York on September 23 and address the UN General Assembly at 9:00 p.m. Israeli time. According to the source, he is to return to Israel before the Sukkot holiday, on September 25.

An advance delegation from the Israeli prime minister’s office and the unit responsible for protecting senior officials arrived on Tuesday evening to finalize the details of the trip. Last month, New York police sources estimated that more than 60 police officers and detectives could be assigned to Netanyahu’s direct and perimeter security, together with federal, diplomatic and Israeli security services.

Mamdani previously stated that city authorities do not have independent legal powers to enforce the International Criminal Court warrant concerning Netanyahu. According to the Jerusalem Post, during his election campaign he promised to order the Israeli prime minister’s arrest and also said that he was not a welcome guest in New York.
