Nigeria to launch digital address system on October 1, 2026 — MyJoyOnline
Nigeria plans to launch the National Digital Alphanumeric Postal Code System on October 1, 2026. It will provide every house and other structure, including in rural areas, with a unique machine-readable digital address.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the system’s launch. According to him, the new postal codes should be simple, accurate and suitable for digital services.
Logistics and emergency services
The system, based on geoinformation technologies, is expected to improve logistics, security, emergency response and the delivery of public services. Tola Odeyemi, Postmaster General of the Nigerian Postal Service, said shortcomings in the current addressing system cost the country between 50 billion and 80 billion Nigerian naira annually due to misdeliveries.

Tijani called the new system a fundamental element of the country’s digital public infrastructure. He said that a single reliable layer of location data should help make coordination faster and responses more precise.
Ghana’s example
The report notes that Ghana launched the nationwide GhanaPost GPS digital addressing system in October 2017. It assigns every house and land plot a unique 10-digit code linked to GPS coordinates, which can be used by ambulance services, police, firefighters, courier companies and e-commerce platforms.
According to the publication, Nigeria’s system is expected to help bring the country into the group of 10–15 countries worldwide that use alphanumeric postal codes.
