Nicola Sturgeon stated that she is not in contact with the imprisoned Peter Murrell
Former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon stated that she has not been in contact with her husband, Peter Murrell, since his incarceration and does not plan to visit him in prison. According to The Guardian, Murrell was sentenced in June to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to embezzling more than 400,000 pounds from the Scottish National Party.
During a podcast recording at the Edinburgh Festival, Sturgeon said she had learned of Murrell’s intention to plead guilty just one week before his court appearance. She later learned, she said, that he had been negotiating a plea deal for several months prior to that.
Sturgeon stated that Murrell had lied to her right up until the day he pleaded guilty. She said she had previously been concerned about his well-being and mental health: he was isolated, rarely left the house, and hardly communicated with anyone. Now, she said, she has no intention of either speaking with him or visiting him in prison.

The former head of the Scottish government also noted that she learned the details of the party’s spending on the very day Murrell pleaded guilty. According to the publication, purchases made with these funds included a camper van, a Jaguar SUV, a Volkswagen Golf, cosmetics, an iPad, and a set of Lalique Feuilles salt and pepper shakers worth 2,618 pounds sterling.
Murrell’s offenses, according to The Guardian, spanned from 2010 to 2022. Sturgeon has consistently denied any knowledge of his actions; following a police investigation, no charges were brought against her. She had previously described the decision to keep Murrell as chief executive of the Scottish National Party as a mistake after she took the party’s helm in November 2014.
