Germany plans to appoint a NATO diplomat as its new ambassador to Ukraine

The German government is preparing to appoint a new ambassador to Ukraine—the position is likely to go to Boris Ruge, a high-ranking diplomat from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

This was reported by Spiegel.

According to available information, the decision is expected to be approved at a government meeting on Wednesday, and this step is considered a formality.

Boris Ruge currently serves as NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Political and Security Affairs. In this role, he is responsible for a wide range of issues, including the Alliance’s partnerships, its expansion, policy toward Russia, and arms control.

The diplomat has extensive experience in international affairs. Prior to his appointment at NATO headquarters in Brussels, he served as deputy director of the Munich Security Conference, was a chargé d’affaires at the German Embassy in Washington, and also served as ambassador to Riyadh.

Ruge began his diplomatic career in 1989, focusing on security and stabilization issues. In particular, he served within NATO structures during the air campaign in Kosovo and was the chief political advisor to the Alliance’s force command in the region.

In addition, Ruge headed the political department at the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, further underscoring his experience in international security and crisis management.

His appointment is expected to strengthen diplomatic cooperation between Germany and Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression.

Prior to this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Oleksandr Balanutsa as Ukraine’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
