Germany has called for Russia to be taken seriously in the Arctic

Germany has called for Russia to be taken seriously in the Arctic

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful stated that Russia is actively expanding its military presence in the Arctic, and that its capabilities in the region should not be underestimated. According to him, this is precisely why NATO countries must strengthen their defenses on the northern flank and be prepared for new hybrid threats.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful called on NATO allies to pay more attention to security in the Arctic and northern Europe. In his view, Russia continues to build up its military presence in the region, and this poses a threat not only to the northern countries but to all of Europe. He made these remarks during a visit to Norway, where he met with the country’s Foreign Minister, Espen Bart Eide. The talks took place in the city of Bodø, located above the Arctic Circle.

According to Wadful, Moscow is seeking to strengthen its position in the Arctic and is increasingly expanding its military presence in the north. “Russia has capabilities in the Arctic that we must take seriously, particularly with regard to our security in Central Europe,” the German foreign minister emphasized.

He also noted that NATO countries have recently been facing not only military but also hybrid threats. That is why, he said, the Alliance must strengthen deterrence and defense on its northern flank. Separately, Wadeful highlighted Norway’s important role in NATO’s security architecture. He said the country is effectively one of the Alliance’s main early-warning centers thanks to its radars and sonar systems, which monitor the situation in the North Atlantic.

The minister emphasized that the Arctic region is of strategic importance to all of Europe. “It is the lifeline of our security and our prosperity,” he said.

This goes beyond the military sphere. Submarine communication cables, critical energy infrastructure, and maritime and air routes—on which the supply of goods to Germany and other European countries depends—all pass through this region. In addition to Russia, Berlin is also paying close attention to China’s growing activity in the Arctic. According to Wadeful, Beijing is actively investing in local infrastructure and scientific research, gradually strengthening its influence in the region.

During their visit to Norway, the ministers also toured the country’s Armed Forces headquarters in Reitan, visited the Arctic Research Institute at Nord University in Bodø, and plan to familiarize themselves with the operations of NATO’s new air operations center. This center opened in October. It has become another component of the Alliance’s air defense command and control system, alongside similar centers already operating in Germany and Spain.

The German minister’s remarks came amid NATO’s growing focus on the Arctic. Allies consider this region to be one of the key areas for European security, as it is there that the military, economic, and geopolitical interests of the world’s leading powers increasingly intersect. This was reported by DPA.

As a reminder, the State Emergency Service reported a fire and damage to a boarding school as a result of a Russian attack on Kyiv.

Over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have reduced the Russian army’s ranks by another 1,260 soldiers. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released updated data on enemy losses as of July 8, also reporting the destruction of a significant amount of enemy equipment.
