The U.S. Senate was unable to pass the defense bill due to disputes over Iran

A group of Democratic senators in the U.S. Senate blocked the progress of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), expressing objections to the administration’s policy regarding the war against Iran.

According to CNN, during the vote on July 14, Democrats did not support the bill—which traditionally enjoys broad bipartisan support—because, in their view, the U.S. administration lacks a clear strategy for a military campaign against Iran.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal stated that the current version of the bill effectively amounts to continued funding for the war. He said that before supporting the bill, the administration must explain its strategy and the ultimate goal of the military operation to Congress and obtain lawmakers’ approval in accordance with the War Powers Act.

For her part, Senator Tammy Duckworth stated that she would not vote for the NDAA until her amendment to suspend additional funding for the campaign against Iran is included in the bill. In her view, increasing funding without proper oversight could lead to a protracted conflict.

Despite the deadlock, Congress still has several months to debate and pass the bill. At the same time, the voting results showed that disputes over the war against Iran could significantly influence the further consideration of the U.S. defense budget.

CNN reported this.

As a reminder, on July 15, the U.S. military announced another operation against Iranian military targets. According to the U.S. military, restrictions on shipping to and from Iranian ports were simultaneously reinstated as part of enhanced maritime control.

Trump officially notified Congress of the resumption of the U.S. war with Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had left clear instructions to launch an unprecedented strike against Iran if Tehran succeeded in carrying out a plan to eliminate him.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran had approached Washington with a request to resume the negotiation process. According to him, the U.S. side agreed to continue the dialogue.
