Germany has opposed granting the Polish oat goose special status in the EU

Poland and Germany have entered a new phase in their official dispute over granting the Polish oat goose the status of a protected geographical indication in the European Union.

After Poland submitted the relevant application, Germany raised objections. Officials in Berlin argue that this subspecies of domestic goose and the specific methods used to raise it are not exclusively Polish, and therefore the product does not meet the criteria for such status.

The European Commission confirmed that it forwarded Germany’s written arguments to the Polish side in early July. Warsaw is currently reviewing the objections and coordinating with Berlin on a date for bilateral consultations.

According to the procedure, the parties have three months to reach a compromise. If necessary, this period may be extended for another three months.

The Polish goose meat industry considers Germany’s position to be economically motivated. They speculate that Berlin fears Polish producers will gain a competitive advantage if the product is granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.

Germany is the largest importer of Polish goose meat, purchasing about two-thirds of its exports. Polish oat-fed geese are traditionally raised on green fodder and oats, and their meat is considered lean and rich in protein.

Poland has no intention of lifting its unilateral ban on imports of certain types of Ukrainian agricultural products. Officials in Warsaw believe that such restrictions are necessary to protect the domestic agricultural market.

Polish Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek has appealed to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, requesting permission to detain and forcibly bring Member of the European Parliament Grzegorz Braun before the prosecutor’s office.
