In Dresden, a man opened fire on police after threatening people

In Dresden, Germany, law enforcement officers wounded a 41-year-old man who, according to preliminary reports, was threatening passersby with a weapon near a supermarket.

Upon the police’s arrival, the man opened fire at the officers. During the incident, he also shouted an Islamic slogan; the circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation.

According to law enforcement, on Wednesday, July 15, witnesses called the emergency hotline to report an unknown man pointing a weapon at people near a supermarket in the Friedrichstadt district. He then entered the store.

Several police patrols arrived at the scene, including members of a special operations unit. 

When the man exited the supermarket, law enforcement officers attempted to apprehend him.

According to police, the suspect fired a musket at the officers while shouting an Islamic religious slogan. In response, several officers fired their service weapons, wounding the man.

After his arrest, he was given first aid at the scene and then hospitalized. No one else was injured in the incident.

Police seized the weapon used by the suspect and are determining whether it was loaded.

According to law enforcement, the detainee is a 41-year-old Turkish citizen. He is suspected of making threats and violating the Weapons Act. The motives behind his actions remain unknown at this time.
