Russia Wants to Track Migrants Using Mobile Phone Geolocation
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to introduce mandatory monitoring of migrants’ whereabouts using mobile phones with geolocation capabilities. The new rules will primarily apply to foreigners who come to the country for an extended period or for employment.
According to the Russian authorities’ plan, during registration, migrants will be required to purchase a phone with a pre-installed electronic profile, which will allow law enforcement to track their location. Official notifications will also be sent via this device, including alerts about the expiration of documents or the need to appear before the relevant authorities.
A similar system has already been implemented for migrants in Moscow and the surrounding region, where a special app is used to transmit geolocation data to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Foreigners who violate these monitoring requirements may have their access to banking services or housing rentals restricted, or may even be deported from the country.
