Ukraine hopes to begin searching for remains in Laskowo, Poland, as early as August

Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, said he hopes search operations will begin in the Polish village of Lasków in August of this year.

The search is for the remains of Ukrainians who died in 1944 as a result of events linked to the activities of the Home Army and the Peasant Battalions. The Ukrainian side is awaiting permission to carry out the necessary work.

Bodnar noted that last year, the Ukrainian side submitted three applications to the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) regarding the search for deceased Ukrainian civilians on the territory of present-day Poland.

“One of them has already been approved; we just need to obtain consent from the Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments. We hope to begin the first phase of work in the village of Lasków in August,” said Vasyl Bodnar.

He added that a response to this matter has already been received from the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland.

“Last year, the Ukrainian side sent letters regarding three localities in connection with the planned searches in Sahryń, Lasków, and Przemyśl. As an institute, we provided procedural support regarding the Laskuv case, while for the other two settlements, we requested that the applications be supplemented. To date, no new documents or supplements have been received in this matter,” the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland stated.

Last year, similar work was carried out by the Ukrainian side in Yurechkiv in the Podkarpacie region. The aim of the work was to locate the probable grave site where, according to source materials and historical accounts, soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army who died on March 4, 1947, in a battle with units of the Polish People’s Army and the Internal Security Corps were believed to be buried. As a result of the operations, it is reported that the grave in question was not found, nor were any man-made elements discovered that would indicate the presence of burials.

This was reported by RMF 24.

Human fetal remains were found on private property in Poland.

Polandhas issued an ultimatum to Zelenskyy to preserve the order.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced closed-door consultations with Ukraine regarding the possible naming of one of the Special Operations Forces units Heroes of the UPA.” According to him, this issue is being discussed through diplomatic channels.

Warsaw has reacted to the decision to rename a Ukrainian military unit. The unit in question is an elite unit of the Special Operations Forces, which, according to reports, was named in honor of the Heroes of the UPA. This has sparked a critical reaction among the Polish public and in political circles.
