Hungary's new government is seeking to rejoin the ICC
Following his election victory, Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisa Party, announced his intention to reinstate Hungary’s membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This was reported by Telex. The politician clarified that although it is impossible to reverse the country’s previous withdrawal from the ICC, his cabinet will submit an application for readmission to the Court.
The decision to withdraw from the ICC was made by Viktor Orbán’s government in April 2025 following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Péter Magyar emphasized that the new government plans to build pragmatic relations with Israel, guaranteeing zero tolerance for antisemitism. He stressed the importance of supporting a strong Jewish community in Hungary as part of the country’s renewed foreign policy.
Returning to the jurisdiction of the Hague Tribunal will be part of Budapest’s efforts to restore its international reputation and its cooperation with democratic institutions. Currently, Magyar’s team is preparing the necessary legal procedures to submit an official request to the ICC leadership. Analysts see this move as Hungary’s intention to distance itself from Russia’s policies and its previous course of isolation within the EU.
Péter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian Tisza Party, stated that Russia poses a threat to his country’s security.
