Orbán's opponent called the sabotage on the gas pipeline an operation aimed at disrupting the elections in Hungary
Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition party “Tisa,” stated that the alleged foiled sabotage attempt on a gas pipeline in Serbia is a staged operation aimed at disrupting the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
The main opponent of incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is convinced that this incident is intended to shift the pre-election landscape in favor of the government with the involvement of Serbia and Russia. Magyar made this claim in a Facebook post on April 5, 2026, citing information he had received over the course of several weeks.
According to the politician, various sources have publicly pointed to the possibility of “accidental” incidents in Serbia near gas infrastructure specifically on the eve of Easter and one week before the vote. Mátyás called on the government to stop stoking panic using the methods of Russian political strategists and emphasized that Orbán would not succeed in derailing the elections scheduled for next Sunday. The opposition figure added that the prime minister’s propaganda machine exploiting this situation would be an open admission of preparing a false-flag operation.
Péter Mádor stressed that Hungarians have reason to fear the prime minister’s actions as he faces the threat of losing power, acting on the advice of Russian agents. He promised that if “Tisa” wins the election, a proper investigation will be conducted to identify the organizers of this provocation. Currently, the opposition leader is demanding that the current leadership immediately provide full information on the developments surrounding the gas pipeline.
Serbian special services and military units neutralized the threat of an attack on a critical infrastructure facility in the municipality of Kanjiža.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the convening of an emergency meeting of the Defense Council in connection with the attempted sabotage of a gas pipeline on the territory of neighboring Serbia.
