Tesla is recalling thousands of Model Ys over a strange detail

Tesla is forced to recall more than 14,500 Model Y crossovers in the U.S. due to what appears at first glance to be a minor but legally significant issue—the absence of a mandatory certification sticker listing the vehicle’s weight specifications. The manufacturer acknowledges a technical glitch at the factory and must now rectify the situation through service centers. This was reported by Reuters.

The recall involves 2025–2026 model year vehicles assembled at the Fremont, California, plant. Due to a glitch in the automated inspection system, some vehicles left the factory without a label on the driver’s door containing critical data on the permissible load.

Although regulators have not recorded any accidents, injuries, or incidents related to this issue, it is considered a violation of U.S. federal safety standards, so the company was forced to launch a large-scale service campaign.

Experts explain that without the label, drivers may not take the vehicle’s maximum weight into account, which could potentially lead to overloading, reduced handling, and increased stopping distance—and thus a higher risk of accidents. “Since the defect is purely physical and not software-related, Tesla cannot fix it remotely—owners will have to visit service centers for a free sticker installation,” the statement notes.

According to the company’s estimates, approximately 45% of the recalled batch actually has this issue, while other vehicles may not require intervention but are still subject to inspection.

Changes have already been made to the quality control process at the factory, adding an additional check for the presence of labels to avoid similar issues in the future. Car owners will begin receiving official notifications in mid-July, after which they will be invited to have the defect fixed for free at Tesla service centers.

Tesla is officially launching its Full Self-Driving system with driver supervision in China following lengthy negotiations with regulators, opening the door for the company to one of the world’s most competitive automotive markets.
