Rubio announced that the U.S. would cease its participation in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine

The U.S. is suspending its participation in the trilateral talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, as it sees no progress. Washington may resume its mediation efforts if it observes any positive developments.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made this statement during a speech at the NATO ministerial meeting in Sweden, according to RBC-Ukraine

He officially announced that the trilateral negotiation process between Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation is currently on hold. The top U.S. diplomat emphasized that Washington is ready to resume mediation only if productive and effective momentum is established.

Assessing the overall situation, the official categorically rejected unofficial reports in the foreign press and behind-the-scenes rumors that the U.S. side is allegedly exerting political pressure on the Ukrainian government or forcing Ukraine to accept predetermined compromise positions. He called such leaks false and destructive, noting that Washington initially joined this diplomatic format as a mediator solely because the U.S. remained the only geopolitical power whose mediating role was accepted by both Kyiv and Moscow.

The U.S. administration decided to temporarily step back from active consultations because the parties have shown no real progress over the past few months. Rubio made it clear that the U.S. has no intention of wasting diplomatic resources on an endless cycle of meetings that are incapable of producing concrete solutions on paper.

The Secretary of State emphasized that the current war can only end at the negotiating table. He is deeply convinced that, under current conditions, neither side will be able to achieve absolute military victory in the classical, traditional sense of the term on the battlefield.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden, during which they discussed preparations for the July summit of Alliance leaders in Turkey.

At the NATO summit in Ankara on May 22, they plan to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s “disappointment” with the Alliance. This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who noted that this issue will be one of the items on the meeting’s agenda.
