Opposition figure Boris Nadezhdin left Russia and traveled to France

Former Russian presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin announced that he had left Russia. He posted a video from Paris on his Telegram channel, noting that he is “alive and free,” but is not currently in Russia.

In 2024, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation denied Nadezhdin’s registration as a presidential candidate, citing allegedly invalid signatures. This year, he planned to run for the State Duma as an independent candidate, but in July, the Russian Ministry of Justice designated him a “foreign agent.”

Later, the politician was fined for allegedly displaying extremist symbols by sharing a link to a livestream featuring a photograph of Alexei Navalny. After the court’s decision took effect, Nadezhdin lost the right to participate in elections. In late July, he announced the end of his election campaign and noted that his opportunities to engage in politics legally in Russia had been exhausted.

Russian security forces briefly detained opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin, who openly criticizes Vladimir Putin’s regime and opposes the war in Ukraine. The politician gained notoriety after he was barred from running in the presidential election, despite having collected a record number of signatures.
