Graciano: Migration to the EU Has Become a Tool for Political Posturing
According to Manlio Graziano, Italy’s temporary suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain following the migration incident in Ceuta was more of a symbolic move driven by domestic politics than a substantive decision within the framework of European policy. The expert expressed this assessment on France 24.
Graziano is the founder and director of the Nicholas Spykman International Center for Geopolitical Analysis. According to him, this incident demonstrates that migration has become a tool for political posturing rather than for policy-making.

The expert believes that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s main audience in this situation is not Brussels or Madrid, but Italy’s increasingly fragmented right-wing political spectrum.
According to Graziano, competition with parties that hold even more hardline right-wing positions is prompting Meloni to constantly reaffirm her hardline stance on migration issues.
