Pakistan condemns alleged Houthi attack on Medina substation — Dawn

Pakistan condemned the alleged Houthi attack on the Taiba electricity distribution station in Medina, Saudi Arabia, on September 29. The country’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a grave provocation and a threat to regional peace and security, Dawn reports.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stated that the target was civilian infrastructure supplying electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque. The ministry stressed the need to respect the sanctity of the two holy mosques and ensure the safety of worshippers and pilgrims.

Saudi coalition’s version

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition in Yemen placed responsibility for the strike on the Houthis. Its spokesperson, Major General Turki al-Maliki, said that a drone struck the Taiba electricity distribution station at 5:11 a.m. on September 29.

According to him, the investigation and drone debris allegedly confirmed the Houthis’ involvement in planning and carrying out the attack. The coalition said that one transformer was taken out of service, but this did not affect the operation of the wider power grid. Al-Maliki also said that the facility supplied electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque. The Houthis denied the accusations of carrying out the attack.

Reaction of other states

Pakistan reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security, and called for the immediate and unconditional cessation of actions it described as reckless. Islamabad also said it intended to continue contributing to the achievement of lasting peace and stability in the region.

Turkey and Qatar also condemned the alleged attack. The League of Arab States called it an unacceptable violation, while Cairo’s Islamic educational institution Al-Azhar said that an attack on Medina offends the feelings of Muslims around the world.
