The Lithuanian Parliament has approved a new government led by Sinkevičius

On July 14, the Lithuanian Seimas approved the policy agenda and composition of the new government, led by Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius. The decision was adopted by members of parliament.

Following the Seimas’ approval, the new Cabinet of Ministers will officially begin its work. The government is expected to implement a program that outlines the key directions of the country’s domestic and foreign policy.

Seventy-two members of the Seimas voted in favor of the government’s program, 29 voted against it, and four abstained.

“The government will work for the common good of all citizens, guided by the values of solidarity, equality, justice, and progress,” the government program states.

In the area of foreign policy, the Cabinet of Ministers reaffirmed its continued support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression and declared its intention to normalize diplomatic relations with China.

At the same time, the tone regarding the international isolation of the Belarusian regime has shifted somewhat in the new program. While Inga Ruginene’s government program included the goal of “active measures to further maintain the international isolation of Russia and Belarus,” the Sinkevičius cabinet’s program, in a similar section, mentions only “active measures to further maintain Russia’s international isolation.” Belarus is not mentioned in this section.

In the area of defense, the new government promises funding that will fully meet the needs of the army and the recommendations of military officials. They plan to pay particular attention to strengthening air defense, protection against drones, and the development of the Baltic defense line.
