Moldovan Parliament approves closure of Russian Cultural Centre in Chisinau

On Thursday, the Moldovan Parliament approved in the second reading a bill allowing the closure of the Russian cultural centre in Chisinau.

This was reported by NewsMaker.

The decision was supported by 57 deputies. The draft law denouncing the agreement with Russia on the establishment and operation of cultural centres was initiated at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Russian drones violated Moldova’s airspace in February 2025.

Parliament noted that under the agreement denounced today, Russia opened a cultural centre in Chisinau in 2009, while Moldova never opened a corresponding centre in the Russian Federation, which violates the balance and purpose of the agreement.

It was also reported that the Russian cultural centre is subordinate to the Russian Embassy and financed by Rossotrudnichestvo, which is under international sanctions.

“In the EU, Rossotrudnichestvo is classified as the main state body promoting the Kremlin’s soft power and hybrid influence, including the ideological concept of the ‘Russian world’,” the parliament stated.

The authors of the denunciation emphasised that in the current geopolitical context, the agreement with Russia can be used to spread distorted narratives, posing a threat to Moldova’s information security.

It should be recalled that the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently summoned the Russian ambassador in connection with the violation of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones.

On the night of 25 November, Russia launched a massive combined strike on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, using 464 attack UAVs and 22 missiles launched from air, sea, and land platforms. Ukrainian air defence downed 452 enemy targets, though some hits and debris caused damage.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said Russia’s overnight attack with drones and missiles on Kyiv and other regions was a “terrorist response” to U.S. and President Trump’s peace proposals.

As a result of the massive strike on the capital, six people were killed and 13 injured, including one child. Rescuers evacuated 18 people, and psychological assistance was provided to 57 citizens.

Seven districts of Kyiv were left without heating due to the attack.

A massive missile and drone strike on Kyiv also resulted in casualties and destruction.
