Ghana’s NPP party allows proxy voting
Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Council has approved proxy voting in the election of national officers scheduled for October 3. The decision removes a restriction used in some recent internal party elections, MyJoyOnline reports.
Diaspora participation
The new voting rules were approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council. Frederick Opare Ansah, chairman of the National Officers Elections Committee, said proxy voting will, in particular, allow eligible NPP diaspora members to take part in the election.
Previously, proxy voting had been prohibited over concerns about possible abuse by delegates. The restriction was also discussed during the party’s presidential primaries in January.

Expanding the electorate
The party has also expanded the electorate for selecting the youth organizer. Previously, voting rights were mainly held by youth organizers and their deputies at constituency, regional and national levels, representatives of the TESCON network, and members of parliament under the age of 40.
In the October 3 election, all delegates under 40 will be able to vote in this category. According to Opare Ansah, the number of voters in the category now exceeds 2,000. In the election for women’s organizer, all female delegates, rather than only women’s organizers and their deputies, will have voting rights.
The Elections Committee has completed nominations, vetting of contenders and the balloting process. All candidates cleared by the vetting committee were assigned positions on the ballot.
