PDP schedules fresh primaries in Gombe State — Premium Times Nigeria

In Nigeria’s Gombe State, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled fresh primaries to select its gubernatorial candidate for September 29, 2026. The decision was made after the Federal High Court in Gombe annulled the previous primaries held on May 26 and ordered a new vote to be conducted within 30 days. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria.

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Pantami, Hamisu Mailantarki and Usman Garry are expected to take part in the vote. Muhammad Dukku, the PDP’s public relations secretary in Gombe State, said the vote would be held on September 29.

The party called on its card-carrying members eligible to vote to gather in their respective electoral districts to select a candidate. The PDP also asked supporters to ensure the orderly conduct of the procedure.

Why the previous primaries were annulled

Pantami had previously sought the nomination of the ruling All Progressives Congress, but moved to the PDP after his former party selected Gwamna as its consensus candidate. His nomination by the PDP sparked controversy among members of both parties in the state.

Long-standing PDP members and other aspirants objected to Pantami’s approval by voice endorsement. Garry’s lawsuit was based on the claim that such a procedure, without a formal open vote by delegates, violated the PDP’s internal rules and electoral legislation. The court agreed with these arguments and ordered fresh primaries.
