The Pentagon is urging defense contractors to urgently ramp up weapons production – WP
The U.S. Department of Defense has called on leaders of the American defense industry to provide, within 21 days, schedules for increasing the production and delivery of critically important systems.
According to The Washington Post, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg emphasized that multi-year development cycles are unacceptable given the depletion of stockpiles.
The rapid depletion of stockpiles is due to the war with Iran. According to CSIS estimates, in the first month of the conflict alone, the U.S. used more than 850 Tomahawk missiles, more than 1,000 Patriot and THAAD interceptors, and more than 1,300 tactical ballistic missiles. As a result, global Patriot stockpiles have fallen from 2,200 to fewer than 827 units, and THAAD stockpiles from 452 to 278.
To expand its capabilities, the Pentagon is entering into agreements with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin; in particular, a $58.6 billion contract has been signed to triple PAC-3 production by 2030. However, full implementation of these programs depends on Congress’s approval of the $1.15 trillion defense budget, which is currently stalled. The recovery of the U.S. defense industry directly affects Washington’s ability to supply weapons to Ukraine.

According to The New York Times, Tehran may have retained stockpiles of highly enriched uranium that would potentially be sufficient to quickly produce up to ten nuclear warheads.
