Peter Magyar announced when the Hungarian government will be formed – Reuters
Péter Magyar, leader of the “Tisa” party, who won Hungary’s parliamentary elections, has stated his readiness to head the country’s next government as early as mid-May. Following a meeting with President Tamás Szujók, Magyar announced that the head of state would officially nominate him for the post of prime minister at the first session of the new parliament.
This was reported by Reuters. President Szujok confirmed these intentions, noting that he would act in accordance with his constitutional duties.
Despite the official procedures, Péter Magyar sharply criticized the incumbent president, stating on social media platform X that Tamás Szujók “is not worthy of representing the unity of the nation” and must immediately step down after the formation of the new Cabinet. Under Hungarian law, the inaugural session of parliament must take place within 30 days of the election, after which the appointed prime minister will present his program to the deputies for approval.
Political changes in Budapest are taking place against the backdrop of significant geopolitical shifts: in April 2026, the Russian economy officially entered a systemic recession, heightening expectations of a shift in Hungary’s foreign policy orientation. At the same time, Ukraine is preparing for a summit-level meeting with the new Hungarian leader as soon as he completes the formation of his government. As of April 15, the situation in the region remains dynamic, and European partners are closely monitoring the first steps of the Magyar administration amid ongoing Russian aggression and energy challenges.
