Peter Magyar responded to the allegations in the phone case
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar responded to the investigation into an incident involving a cell phone, which, according to the investigation, he allegedly took from a man and threw into the Danube in 2024. The politician denies committing the crime, while stating his willingness to take responsibility for his actions.
Mátyás made this statement following the Hungarian Parliament’s decision to suspend his parliamentary immunity.
On September 28, the Hungarian Parliament voted to strip Mádár of his immunity. The decision was supported by 139 members of Parliament; there were no votes against or abstentions. This allows the prosecutor’s office to continue its investigation into the politician.
Mátyás himself had previously called on members of his party to support the lifting of his immunity. He stated that a person who has nothing to hide should not fear accountability under the law. “I have not committed a crime; I take responsibility for all my actions,” the Hungarian prime minister said during a parliamentary session.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the incident occurred on the night of June 21, 2024, at a nightclub in Budapest. A man was filming Madyar on his cell phone, after which an argument broke out between them. According to the investigation, the politician took the phone and subsequently threw it into the Danube. The device was later retrieved from the water by divers.
Mágyar disagrees with the legal assessment of his actions. He has stated that the case is politically motivated and that the prosecutor’s office is attempting to use it to discredit him personally.
At the same time, Mályai sharply criticized the Prosecutor General’s Office over its investigation into the funds of the National Bank of Hungary. He ironically remarked that he might throw the documents into the Danube so that law enforcement would finally begin questioning those responsible for the case.
“Perhaps I should throw the documents on the National Bank of Hungary’s funds into the Danube, and then the prosecutor’s office would finally interrogate, along with me, those who stole 700 billion forints,” the politician wrote. He also asked whether, in that case, the prosecutor’s office would send a few divers into the river.

Earlier, Péter Magyar stated that his country had not joined the “Carpathian Eight” regional initiative launched by Ukraine. Speaking in parliament, Magyar noted that Budapest had received an invitation but, for valid reasons, decided not to participate in the initiative. However, the Hungarian prime minister did not disclose the specific reasons behind this decision.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar also stated that his government would not allow the construction of oil storage facilities on Hungarian territory intended to serve Ukraine’s needs.
