Five German soldiers are suspected of theft during the evacuation from Kabul
Five Bundeswehr servicemembers are under investigation for possible involvement in a theft that occurred during the chaotic evacuation of allied forces from Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
According to the investigation, the incident may have occurred in the summer of 2021, when foreign citizens and local allies were hastily evacuated from Afghanistan following the Taliban’s seizure of power.
On July 27, the public prosecutor’s office in the southern German city of Kempten announced that five Bundeswehr soldiers involved in the 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan were under investigation.
“The investigations concern allegations that the accused illegally appropriated goods from stores at Kabul Airport during the evacuations,” said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
No further details of the investigation have been provided at this time.
The case was assigned to the Kempten prosecutor’s office because offenses committed by Bundeswehr personnel during overseas missions fall within its jurisdiction.
As is known, in August 2021, the withdrawal of U.S. and allied forces from Afghanistan amid the Taliban’s rapid advance on the capital descended into chaos. About 4,600 people were evacuated to Germany, the majority of whom were Afghans, along with 403 German citizens.
